Baking, Doilies & Poppies Mixed Media Tutorial:
I cut an 8x8 square and die cut a Spellbinders Classic Heart from a thin sheet of cardboard which I salvaged from a recent shipment. I prepped both with white gesso and used a heat tool {blow dryer set to low actually} to set. Next step was to paint a base color on my heart and I blended baby pink & coffee latte together and brushed a light coat on. I set it aside to dry and began working on my 8x8 square.
This is a mixed media project so I want to create depth on my canvas by adding texture to my background. I used acrylic paints, an acrylic paint dabber and a sea sponge to achieve this. The pattern on the sea sponge provides some texture but we'll add more before we're finished. First up was pumpkin orange-I dipped the tip of the sponge into pumpkin orange and randomly applied the paint. The process was repeated for spring green and a watermelon dabber provided more texture. Notice the circular pattern that it adds to my board. I finished by spraying color mists on my board and spreading the color around with a brush. If it seems a little heavy use a paper towel to blot and rub the color into or off your project, depending on the look you are going for.
At this point my board is prepped and has received background texture. Now I am ready to add more texture through rub ons and my dimensional heart. I actually forgot to snap a picture of the rub on process but most of you have used a rub on I'm sure. You simply place it where you want and rub it on, called burnishing as well, and that's it.
A few tips for you though:
1) Rub-ons come on a sheet with multiple rub-ons usually. To protect the other images from transferring onto your project cut the rub-on you wish to use from the sheet. They are sticky and if they come into contact with something they might accidentally rub off and you'll lose them.
2) If the craft stick you received with your rub ons isn't working try using a bone folder instead.
3) Do not fret if it does not transfer perfectly!!! Those imperfections add character and texture to your project. I purposely do not try and transfer every little speck because I use the remnants to add texture all over my canvas. Check out this close up, can you see the little black specks leftover from my doily rub ons? They give it an aged look and add visual interest so it is okay if the transfer is not perfect.
4) Very Important! Seal your rub ons with Mod Podge-Matte or they can and may rub off. Just brush a light coat on and it will set them. :)
Okay, let's get back to my die cut heart which will be the focal point of my project. It has been prepped and painted and now it's time to add the texture. I was working with specific challenge requirements so my texture for this piece is provided by baking crystals which were mixed with a combo of meringue powder, sugar and water. I applied a light coat of Liquitex Matte Gel medium gel mat with a nylon brush and immediately I spread my baking crystal mixture on top. I set it aside for 10 minutes to harden a bit and sealed it with a coat of Plaid's Mod Podge-Matte which I dabbed on with a nylon brush. (I prefer nylon brushes b/c they do not shed.)
While it was drying I die cut my scalloped heart from a piece of white cardstock for backing and border punched my borders with the Lace Doily Edger by Martha Stewart. I had to create my own corners and I trimmed pieces from the leftover border, matched the holes and was finished.
At this point my project could be anything-a framed picture, cover of an album, etc.. I chose to turn it into a wall hanging and set two large eyelets with the original We R Memory Keepers Crop-a-Dile eyelet setter at the top. A light green ribbon was chosen to bring more of that color into play but any coordinating color would work. Here's my finished wall hanging and I hope you enjoyed my first tutorial. The idea is to inspire so if you create your own mixed media piece I'd love it if you'd leave me a link so I can visit your blog. If you don't have a blog you can join Splitcoaststampers and upload it to your gallery and I'll be sure to stop by. Smiles, Lisa xx
