Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge #34 - Layering Stencil: Monoprint 

The final challenge, Layering Stencil: Monoprint, bring us to the last technique in Tim Holtz's Compendium of Curiosities 3 book. It makes me sad to say goodbye to the challenges but I know that I'll keep up with the Curiosity  Crew through their blogs and on FB. They have provided amazing inspiration each challenge and I just want to say a big thank you.  Also to Linda Ledbetter for hosting all 34 challenges, now that's commitment!

For my last project I decided on a tag because Tim seems kinda fond of 'em. ;)

A little close up of the Layering Stencil: Monoprint technique using Tim's Honeycomb stencil. In the upper left corner I stamped a quote, from the Classics #16 set, which fits perfectly with my final entry. 

 I had to use this gorgeous butterfly from the Limitations set. It was water colored with Distress Markers-seedless preserves, mowed lawn, squeezed lemonade, mustard see, broken china, spiced marmalade- and received a dusting of Clear Rock Candy Distress Glitter for some texture.

Has Someone Been Painting My Roses?

Compendium of Curiosities 3 - Challenge #21

Hi everyone, hope you're all set for Valentine's Day tomorrow. We are off to see our girl later today and enjoy the weekend with her, can't wait!

My tag features the Rock Candy Distress Glitter technique which you'll find on pg. 55 of Tim's CC3 book. There's still time to play along and you can order an autographed copy by Tim here.

The technique was super easy and fun to do and I've got a few close ups to share.

I used a face stamp from the Nature Walk set by Tim for my technique. Unsure of who she is? She's the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland. I tucked one of Tim's playing cards, which I cut in half because I like the back as much as the front, in her crown and added roses (red of course) with a band of Kaisercraft pearls. Love her sparkly face!

Tim's Idea-ology keyhole was used because of its heart shape. Industrial stickers and remnant rub ons were used and I altered my crinkled ribbon with black soot, brushed pewter and pumice stone distress stain. Basically I dabbed it all over with the 3 colors, wadded it up and dried with a heat tool. Silver cording from my stash was used for the bow.  

So back to the question posed in my blog title, has someone been painting the Red Queen's roses. Looks like they may have been caught and didn't finish what they started. 

A text stamp, also from the Nature Walk set, was randomly stamped on my tag. If you look at the photo above you'll see an angels wing which is part of a collage stamp from Tim's Stamper's Anonymous Classics #9 set in the background. I stamped various wings from the collage all over my tag. See the set of wings peeking above the border on the right side (next to the washi tape). With the Red Queen running around you need an angel or two on your side. :) The heart stick pins have been in my stash for quite a while and I tucked them in beside my the partially painted roses.

As always I can't share my technique out of respect for Tim but I do hope that you liked my tag. After a frustrating start, it was my third attempt, I finally decided to go with something that would amuse me. Once I began building the background with Tim's heart stencil I knew where I was headed-back to Wonderland. Yes, I refuse to grow up lol!

12 Tags of 2015-January

~my January tag~

I'm excited to start off 2015 by playing along with Tim's 12 Tags of 2015. This is the first year that's ever happened! As I got into the various steps I found myself enjoying the creative process and that's why I love Tim's techniques and fabulous products.

Following his lead I started off by grabbing a #8 manila tag and adding Melange tissue wrap to the base. I used Mowed Lawn, Tumbled Glass and Vintage Photo Distress Paint to color the tissue then sprayed it with Walnut Stain Distress Spray. Next I grabbed a pack of chitchat stickers and began choosing the words I wanted to use on my tag. The alpha numbers were altered with distress paint-tarnished brass and brushed pewter-while the "5" received a coat of glossy accents and a dusting of tarnished brass distress glitter. 

As an afterthought I added a layer of Tim's filmstrip over the Idea-olgy alpha number one.

I added chitchat sticker words to the top that relate to travel. We have several trips planned for 2015 that I'm excited about! In fact my family started off the year by enjoying a week at the most magical place ever-Walt Disney World-and we had a blast. :) If you look closely you can see I also included some rub on words-a beautiful world. The wing, mini gear sprockets and mirrored stars are Idea-ology products. The stars were adhered to the sprockets with glossy accents as were all of the metal elements.

After altering the alpha numbers with tarnished brass distress paint I decided to go over it with brushed pewter as well. An Idea-ology arrow points to the bottom of my tag. 

Chitchat stickers were added to the bottom and I included more rub ons. The stickers were distressed with distress markers-brushed corduroy and black soot. 

Before I close I've included a few photos of Cinderella's castle from our recent trip. I love the Frozen look at night and best of all the color continually changes. It's so cool and I kept snapping away!

PEACE, HOPE and JOY

Whew!!!

Talk about sliding in under the wire, well I am with my tag for the 16th challenge at Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge. I'm running way behind this week and my goal was to get this done and linked up before Mr. Linky expires tonight. It has been a week! :(

Challenge 16 - Layering Stencil: Embossing 

This one is technique based so no sharing of my process but you can check it out on pg. 50 of Tim's CC3 book. If you don't have one yet be sure to put it on your Christmas Wish List so you can play along with us next year. You can order an autographed copy here. Tomorrow when the newest challenge is introduced we'll be halfway through the challenges in the book. That's absolutely mind-boggling to me! 

Here are a few close-ups.

I love word bands and jumped for joy when Tim released holiday word bands this fall. Mowed lawn distress ink was rubbed into the recesses of the letters and I used Tim's red and cream trim to fasten it to my tag.

The bird was die cut from grunge paper using Tim's Caged Bird Alterations die, I inked him with festive berries distress ink and embossed certain areas to highlight him. Christmas rub ons were added to a white Idea-ology plaque and the silver metallic stars were created with Tim's Stars Layering Stencil and Studio 490's silver metallic embossing paste. 

The center of my tag was left in its natural state and its the area that I did my embossing on. No details per the rules. ;) I'm a huge fan of Tim's layering stencils and used three on this tag-Holly, Stars and Latticework. Idea-ology metal embellies were added to complete it.

Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge 14 - Colored Crackle

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

My entry is early for the CC3C but I'm sliding into home plate with my October tag for Tim's 12 Tags of 2014. I'm just glad I made the deadline at this point with the whirlwind month I've had. ;) I combined the techniques on his October tag with the current Colored Crackle challenge at CC3C and I gotta say, I love my tag. As usual it finished totally different than my original vision but that's okay.

At this point my image (Tim's fab witch) was stamped on my tag and embossed, then I used the stamped image on the mask sheet to cover and protect it from the texture that I added to my background.  

I used Studio 490's translucent embossing paste which takes the color a bit differently than regular texture paste. After it dried I went back to add more depth in color with Distress Paint and Markers in some places because it was bugging me. ;)

I don't own the pumpkin image Tim used on his tag so I used another one with a black cat, colored with Distress Marker and gave it a shiny coat with Glossy Accents. After it dried I cut it out and adhered it to my tag.

I used some of the same Idea-ology products he used like the wish bone, alpha tiles, monocle, Halloween remnant rub ons, chain and trim. I couldn't resist using this Trick or Treat token though. :)

This is where the CC3C-Colored Crackle challenge part comes in and I can't go into the technique so guess you'll just have to buy the book. I did use Tim's window die and it was die cut from his grunge paper.

I Love Distress Phototinting!

Hello everyone!

I have been waiting for this challenge
~ Distress Phototinting ~
at the Compendium of Curiosities 3 Challenge. We are on challenge #12 and this one by far is my favorite as Tim has introduced us to a new way of updating old photos. You can find this technique on pg. 41 of Tim's Compendium of Curiosities III book and if you fancy an autographed copy click here.  

I love the inspiration this week by the Curiosity Crew and many of them created tags so I did too. As usual, I can't share the technique out of respect for Tim but I can share a few close ups and the products I used to create my tag. 

This adorable little boy is my dad and he's 4 years old in this photo. It's the only photo I have of him at a young age so I cherish it beyond measure. The girl with the cute bob is his big sis, Helen. He absolutely adored her! If you take a close look you'll see that they are standing in front of a cornfield and after coloring their clothes with distress markers I decided to also color the cornstalks as well as the ground. I also enhanced the windmill so it would show up as it was very faint in the photo. 

To create my tag I began by using distress stain to color the base, then placed Tim's schoolhouse layering stencil on top and dabbed walnut stain distress ink over it. Wendy Vecchi's translucent embossing paste and Tim's sunburst layering stencil add some texture to the top.  Mustard seed distress ink was pounced on top of the rays and I spritzed it with some water to activate the other colors. I did not take step by step photos as time did not allow. I'm running at Mach 5 with my hair on fire these days so I'm just happy to enter this tag in time. :)

I used Idea-ology products with the exception of the two letter charms. R is for Ralph, my Dad's name, and H is for Helen, his sister/best friend/confidant. Life wasn't easy in rural Nebraska during the depression and at age 6 his life was altered in a drastic way. His mother passed away after giving birth to triplets. Helen and the infants went to live with their aunt in the city while the boys stayed on the farm with their dad. He lost his mom and older sister at the same time and quickly became responsible for his two younger brothers with my grandfather working full time. I can't imagine how hard it was for all of them.

On a happy note, my baby turns 20 today so hubby and I are off for a celebratory birthday weekend with her.

Also, my son and DIL will be home soon and I can't wait to see them! It has been 11 months and this mama's ready for a big hug and plenty of time to catch up. :) Now you know why I've been scarce in blog land, I'm working overtime to fluff the house and yard up, cook ahead and get some of my DT projects finished so I can relax and enjoy my kids.
